Hot Vinyasa is a vigorous yoga and the signature style at Midtown. The room is heated to 85 to 90 degress so your body is warmed, allowing for deeper stretching. The muscles, tendons and ligaments become soft and more flexible. The heat promotes sweating which is a method of cleansing to aid in the healing aspects of this yoga style. All levels of practitioners are welcomed. Please bring water and a towel.

Community Hot Vinyasa (Sunday at 6:30pm and 8:30pm) costs $6. It is a beginner hot yoga class, acessible for those who have financial limitations. Cash only please. Midtown Yoga Center and Edie are proud to include the principle of Karma Yoga into our schedule.

Astanga Yoga is a system of Yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. It is a dynamic series of postures, practiced in a flowing sequence and coordinated with the breath. This challenging and exciting style of yoga helps develop balance, strength and flexibility, as it tones the body. The Series itself does not change and once mastered can be practiced anywhere. The body, however, does change so involvement in the Series becomes deeper as one’s flexibility, strength and stamina increase: a beautiful dance between breath and body. The full practice requires a moderate level of physical fitness and a willingness to work hard. Strength, stamina and sweat are unique aspects of Ashtanga Yoga and it is said that where there is no effort there is no benefit. As Pattabhi Jois says, “Do your practice and all is coming“.

Yin Yoga: a one hour Yin Yoga class begins with Suryanamascar A and B, then flows into a specific series of gravity-assisted postures that will focus on opening the hips, back and shoulders. The postures are held for at least 20 breaths, ending with Savasana. This class is a nice way to create balance in your overall yoga practice — working on breathing and proper alignment, while learning how to view discomfort objectively. As with all types of yoga, the practice of Yin Yoga culminates in the ability to comfortably sit in an upright posture for an extended period of time, enhancing one’s ability to go deeper into meditation.

A fundamental characteristic of Yin Yoga is the holding of poses for several minutes. While the most popular forms of yoga, like ashtanga or power yoga, are yang-emphasizing (rhythmic movement and muscular contraction), both Yin and Yang forms of exercise are necessary and supplement each other.

Tribal-Fusion Belly-dance is an experimental dance popular on the west coast. It usually incorporates a troupe of dancers moving together with one leader. The non-traditional element of music and costuming are signature in its style and set it apart from the more traditional Cabaret/Turkish style of belly-dance.

The class is a full-body, intense workout, which incorporates a yoga warm-up and cool-down. This ancient and sacred dance will tone the body and center the mind, bringing flexibility, strength, grace, self confidence and power to your life. Each week the hip, rib cage, head and torso isolations will be reviewed and expanded on. Hip locks, pops, circles and shimmies will be broken down and layered with arm and traveling combos.

Wear yoga or work-out attire, hip scarf optional! All levels and drop-ins welcome, yet students are strongly encouraged to attend weekly.

Freestyle Fusion Dance …is a combination of modern, jazz, African, eastern techniques and club dance styles. This is an intense movement class. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Be prepared to sweat and groove. All levels welcome.
